So they had to scramble, the people who put it on. It suddenly became fashionable to wear whatever the hell you wanted – nothing was too bizarre or zany. Mud, no bathrooms and bad trips: Grace Slick looks back on Woodstock "If you're 18 and you don't care about sitting in the mud, it's fun," says Jefferson Airplane's frontwoman.

It's just huge. Little wonder then that fringing was so popular with the outdoor-loving flower power movement.

Too bad. It was a choice she wanted to make carefully as it was important to her to feel part of a tribe, to be fully accepted into this subculture.

Half an hour before you're supposed to go on, which for us was about nine o'clock at night, a helicopter comes and picks you up, drops you off backstage, you go up, you play your set, then the helicopter takes you back to the hotel. For us, it wasn't quite as marvellous as it might be for somebody who's 18 years old. It is almost as though she tries to escape what is in fashion – now everybody is wearing the swirly, psychedelic, floaty paisley prints, she refuses to.

You've got that stupid phrase, "Been there, done that, got the T-shirt." The natural features of Grace’s vest are heightened as snail shells appear to be used for the two top buttons at the chest, under which the lacing starts at an empire line. But those are people like the Dead and us and Janice and everybody, we knew what it was. Woodstock might have been a magical, musical, drug-fuelled experience for the hundreds of thousands of young people in the crowd — but for the performers, it was a bit of a mess, says Jefferson Airplane frontwoman Grace Slick.Aug.

But it's not real. The reason why people go to concerts — because they're a pain in the ass and it's expensive — is to have the real experience. When you go to some kind of a concert like Woodstock was, and you go, "My God, look. This fantastical way of dressing was Grace’s dream come true and she was like a child in a sweet shop, choosing costumes from theatres and goodwill stores and making clothes herself from towels if she had to. “I remember she wore a white Native American Indian outfit at Woodstock, and she hated the photos so much she tried to stop the Airplane footage being used in the film.” In fact, the Airplane’s Woodstock performance was almost up there with Hendrix’s version of The Star Spangled Banner. Both he and I are scorpios, and so is Joni Mitchell. But the idea of it, and the idea that we attracted that many people, was kind of amazing. You can't make a normal sandwich. "I mean, Joni Mitchell got all, you know, sugary about it and said we got to get ourselves back to the garden and we're stardust and we're golden and all that kind of stuff, which is a little bit over the top. Grace had always been captivated by clothes worn centuries previously, for example long biblical robes, and so the kaftan became popularised in 1967 and she wore this to Jefferson Airplane’s first (and Grace’s favourite) major rock and folk festival, Monterey Pop. "Parts of it there were fun and kind of funny because it was so, by then, screwed up for a number of reasons. So we could feel it coming on. They can hear a facsimile of it. I was 29, so my idea of fun is not having to watch out for a white dress and no bathrooms and playing at six o'clock in the morning. So Woodstock, personally, was not fun. Whilst the colour (or lack thereof) actually makes her stand out from the crowd, the fashionable fringing and flared trousers put her firmly into the hippie movement. It might be presumed that in the quest to get ‘back to nature’, the outfit is made from buckskin, a soft leather from the hide of deer, originally worn by Native Americans. And I've done that onstage. We also made mistakes. These are often trimmed with a fringe, which was used originally for function rather than form by mountain men to allow the garment to shed rain and dry faster. "I was 29, so my idea of fun is not having to watch out for a white dress and no bathrooms and playing at six o'clock in the morning.
