As a child I loved Ella Enchanted so I wanted to give Ogre Enchanted a try. On nights when we were both troubled—usually about money—we’d each go to the kitchen and find the other there. I loved Ella Enchanted, and loved the world that Gail Carson Levine has created, but this one had some problematic messages, that I felt would deter me from handing to a child. Had the love I’d sensed been self-love?
